June 13, 2016 - 5.00 to 6.00 pm, Global Media Forum (in cooperation with Deutsche Welle), Bonn

Internet intermediaries, such as Facebook, Google or Twitter, guide users through the web of information and knowledge. For journalists, intermediaries have become essential as they provide access to and distribution of journalistic content.

Taking over from the power of "traditional media," these information intermediaries direct public attention and provide fora for public communication and civic journalism - both of which are at the core of any vibrant democracy.

How can societies around the world ensure that Internet intermediaries act in the public interest?

Our goals

  • Identify interrelations between information intermediaries and power
  • Map the current status quo
  • Discuss options for media, journalists, users, states, and intermediaries ( e.g., how to make intermediaries more transparent and accountable in regard to the public interest)
  • Highlight the role of accountable information intermediaries for (open) journalism and for democratic public spheres

Our guests

Rebecca MacKinnon
Director of the Ranking Digital Rights project and Co-Founder of the citizen media network Global Voices Online

Frane Maroevic
Director of the Office of the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media

Moderation
Dr. Ben Wagner
