International FES Projects on the Far Right

Right-wing Extremism and its co-phenomena are not only the focus of our work in Germany. There´s also very interesting projects in other parts of the FES world.

Gewerkschaften und Rechtspopulismus in Europa / Trade unions and right-wing populism in Europe (2023)
(FES Europäischer Gewerkschaftsdialog / European Trade Union Dialogue)

The rise of right-wing populist movements and parties throughout Europe is not without consequences for trade unions. In a sequence of short country studies and an analysis based on them, trade union options for action are examined.

Understanding Right-Wing Populism And What To Do About It (2022)

The report "Understanding Right-Wing Populism And What To Do About It"presents a combination of empirical and qualitative analysis of right-wing populist parties (RWPPs) in 17 European countries.
In order to better understand the success of European right-wing populist parties (RWPPs) the report looks at the Three Ps:

  • The First P: People: Why do individual people vote for RWPPs? (Demand)
  • The Second P: Parties: What makes certain RWP parties more successful than others? (Supply)
  • The Third P: Policies: What is the role of social policies in facilitating and/or moderating RWPP success?

Right-wing Populism and the Covid-19 Crisis in Europe

At the beginning of the first pandemic wave, some of our European FES offices ventured on the question of whether right-wing extremist or populist parties could capitalise on the crisis and what effect the pandemic has on political culture. Country analyses from France, Sweden, Finland, Germany, Greece, Spain, Italy and Romania were produced. Out of these country reports we also compiled an overview analysis.

#30Transformation! (2020-)

Right-wing populist parties are on the rise almost everywhere in Europe. In the Scandinavian countries, too, where Social Democracy has had the most decisive influence on the development of a solidary society and an inclusive and emancipatory welfare model, policymakers face increasingly substantial difficulties in forming government coalitions vis-à-vis aspiring competitors who have emerged on the far right in recent decades. In light of the remarkable rise of right-wing populism in Germany and its growing presence in parliaments and discourses, the volume at hand contextualizes and compares the growth of right-wing populism in Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Germany. Based on the identification of ideal-typical strategies applied by progressive parties towards right-wing populist parties in the past and in the present, the authors evaluate the success of various strategies and develop recommendations for progressive and sustainable actions to »reclaim action« against right-wing populist parties. In doing so, the volume addresses both scientists and policymakers as well as the interested public.
