The Museum Karl-Marx-House is a listed historical building without a lift. It comprises of a front and a back building with slightly different storey heights. An inner courtyard with two and three steps respectively connects the two parts of the building. The museum garden is located behind the back building accessible via one step down and two steps up.
The front building of the museum is accessible via one step at the front door. Please let our staff know if you require assistance and they will be happy to help you. The rooms Prelude, Biography and House History, offering a 5-minute video on the history of the house, as well as the museum shop on the ground floor are wheel chair accessible.
There are no wheel chair accessible toilets in the museum. The toilets are in the basement.
However, there is a wheel chair accessible toilet located in the office building (Brückenstraße 5, second floor) opposite the museum. It is accessible via the ground floor entrance of Weinhaus Büsching (terrasse) and the lift. Please ask our staff if you require access to this toilet.
Most of the evening events and seminars at the Karl-Marx-Haus take place on the first floor of the office building. The function room is wheel chair accessible via Weinhaus Büsching (entrance Brückenstraße or Stresemannstraße/terrasse) and the lift.
Quiet Hour in the Karl Marx House
The museum is generally considered to be a rather quiet space. However, even here an installation may light up brightly, a film may be playing loudly or the lighting in the exhibition may be too bright. For people with sensory sensitivities who already experience such situations as a flood of stimuli, we are now offering a ‘Quiet Hour’ in the Karl Marx House on the first Tuesday of every month from 4 pm, starting in 2024.
During the ‘Quiet Hour’, the environment is adapted to create an atmosphere that is as low stimulus as possible and allows for a relaxed visit. For example, lighting effects and noise sources will be minimised, and warning signs will be posted at noisy stations.
There are no guided tours during this time. We also ask our visitors to refrain from making phone calls and shouting loudly. As not all installations will be available during this time, admission during the ‘Quiet Hour’ will be €2.50 per person.
