Feminism and women’s rights under attack!

Terminexport im ICS-Format

Women’s rights worldwide are under pressure. With international guests we discuss the situation in different world regions as well as successful counter strategies.

Despite some progress towards gender equality, feminist struggles are far from being a relic of the past. In Europe and the US right-wing populist positions gained traction in recent years and their advocates aim to turn the clocks backwards in regard to gender roles. In many countries in Latin America, Africa, Asia and the MENA region conservative attacks on women’s and LGBTIQ-rights are increasing. Often issues of bodily integrity and abortion, the alleged protection of public moral and the fight against so-called “gender-ideology“ are at the forefront of the struggles. Though, what lies under the surface is a struggle over power in the respective societies.

But feminists around the world are not willing to take any setbacks. Many of the most prominent social protest movements were feminist. They took their protest to the streets and organized resistance against antifeminism and hate speech online. With international guests we want to discuss the situation in the respective world regions, how struggles for women's rights are changing today and how successful strategies against anti-feminism look like.

We want to discuss with Sahar Aloul (SADAQA - Organization for the Promotion of Women's Labour Rights, Jordan), Scheaffer Okore (Activist and Vice-Chairperson Ukweli Party, Kenya), Anita Gurumurthy (Co-Founder and Director of IT for Change, India), Yasmina Banaszczuk (Journalist and Author, Germany) and Ailynn Torres Santana (FLACSO Ecuador, Cuba) – Moderation: Kristina Lunz, Centre for Feminist Foreign Policy.
