Energy Partnership between Germany and Algeria: An Opportunity for Whom?
Expert discussion in cooperation with the German Trade Union Confederation
Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Hiroshimastraße 17, 10785 Berlin (House 1)
Algeria is increasingly moving to the center of European energy policy – with Germany regarded as a key partner. New political signals, Algeria’s growing importance as a gas supplier, and ambitious plans for renewable energy and green hydrogen open up opportunities for long-term economic cooperation and securing Europe’s energy supply. At the same time, these developments raise fundamental questions: How viable is Algeria’s transformation strategy? What does it mean for industry and employment in Germany? How climate-friendly is the water-intensive production of green hydrogen in arid countries such as Algeria? And how can social standards as well as reliable and fair partnerships be ensured?
To discuss these questions, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) and the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB) cordially invite you to an expert discussion on March 4, 2026, from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. at the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Hiroshimastraße 17, 10785 Berlin (House 1, Conference Hall).
We are pleased to welcome voices from Algeria and Germany. The panel will feature experts from politics, academia, and trade unions:
• Imane Boukhatem, Research Fellow, University of Flensburg / Fossil Exit Group
• Naoual Belakhdar, Political Scientist, Freie Universität Berlin
• Dr. Nina Scheer, Member of the German Bundestag, Energy Policy Spokesperson of the SPD Parliamentary Group
• Frederik Moch, Head of the Department for Structural, Industrial and Services Policy, DGB Federal Executive Board
Following a brief presentation of the study “The Political Economy of Green Hydrogen in Algeria” by Imane Boukhatem and an overview of the political and economic situation in Algeria, the energy partnerships will be discussed from the perspective of German politics and trade unions.
The event will be held in German and English with simultaneous interpretation and will be moderated by Robin Frisch, Head of the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Office in Algeria.
Please register by March 1, 2026.
