Lebanon has been grappling with a deep political and economic crisis since 2019. Rising social injustice, corruption and political repression have made life difficult for many Lebanese in their home country, driving especially the young generation to emigrate. Under these circumstances, the parliamentary elections in May 2022 represent a glimmer of hope for a better future and real democratic change.
In the light of the current situation in Lebanon and in the run-up to the elections, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung in Berlin would like to cordially invite you to the screening of the film "A Moments of Bliss: The Story of Love and Hate between a Country and its People", followed by a panel discussion and reception. The film, which is written and produced by the FES in Beirut, highlights different facets of social and political injustice in the lives of people in Lebanon through four personal stories. It also shows the relevance of civil society engagement for democratic change and the importance of electoral participation for a better future.
The panel discussion will address the following questions: What are the possible ways out of the crisis in Lebanon? What changes should be made to create a better life perspective for the future generations in Lebanon? Which role can Germany and Europe play to support democratic change? And to what extent could a large electoral turnout by the Lebanese diaspora contribute to this change?
