Gender Justice

Feminist protest movements against sexism, violence, political discrimination and economic exploitation have, in recent years, brought greater attention to the call for gender equality on the African continent. In many places, women’s movements are working alongside human rights defenders and trade unions to promote inclusive democratic participation, peaceful conflict resolution and equitable economic development.

However, despite progress on gender equality in some African countries, the continent ranks lowest in the United Nations Development Programme’s Gender Inequality Index (2023 GII). The rights and freedoms of women and minorities are restricted in many places by social, religious and legal norms. The climate crisis, violent conflicts, the rapid transformation of the world of work, the unequal global division of labour and exclusionary urbanisation are further exacerbating social and gender-based inequalities. The commitment to social democracy and participation on the African continent is therefore inextricably linked to the advocacy for gender justice.

In this context, the FES supports networking amongst feminist actors and between them and political parties and trade unions. It provides forums for dialogue to develop shared concerns and strengthens alliances that can represent these in the political arena. The Competence Centre for Gender Justice in Maputo, Mozambique, also works with its partners to contribute to the further development of gender policy debates at regional and international level through publications, initiatives and projects.
