In 2019, mass protests led to the fall of Omar al-Bashir. The longtime ruler had been in power for 30 years, backed by an alliance with Islamists and the military. Just two years after the peaceful revolution, a military coup in 2021 shattered hopes for a democratic transition. By April 2023, divisions within the military regime plunged Sudan into a brutal war.
The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) has been active in Sudan since 1975. Since 2012, FES Sudan has focused on strengthening the involvement of young citizens in political processes, through targeted training and education programs. In line with a resolution passed by the German Bundestag in 2020, FES supported Sudan's transformation by promoting civil society, preparing for elections, advancing economic reforms, and strengthening democratic political parties. Through close cooperation with civil society representatives, fostering dialogue, and connecting committed, progressive activists, FES also supports peacebuilding and democratic innovation at the local level.
FES collaborates with a wide range of stakeholders in Sudan. This includes representatives from politics and government, trade unions, young activists, media organizations, selected universities and research institutions, established civil society organizations, and other initiatives that were founded during the 2019 revolution.
