Democracy continues to enjoy broad support in Africa. Many people see it as the best form of government and prefer it to alternatives such as military rule or autocracy. At the same time, dissatisfaction is growing, as the state often fails to meet citizens’ expectations: corruption, a lack of social protection, a shortage of good jobs and inadequate public services are putting democratic systems under severe strain. Add to this a young, rapidly growing population on the continent with the world’s highest rate of urbanisation. In its working line on social democracy, the FES is therefore committed to cooperate with its partners to strengthen political participation and improve access to reliable public services.

Young people, in particular, have a positive view of democracy. In their everyday lives, however, they often find that political institutions do not adequately represent their interests. A lack of economic prospects, high public debt and limited participation are leading to protests in many places. The FES therefore supports young democrats in taking on responsibility, building networks and campaigning for strong democratic institutions in their countries.

Africa’s cities are also at the heart of our work. Many people move there in the hope of better living conditions and improved access to public services. However, these expectations are often not met. Instead, social inequalities are exacerbated. Together with our partners, we are developing approaches to ensure fair and reliable public services and better access to public goods – particularly for disadvantaged groups. In this way, we aim to help make urbanisation more socially just, inclusive and democratic.

Through our Democracy Hub, we promote dialogue on the future of democracy in Africa. The Hub brings together stakeholders from civil society, trade unions, academia and politics, connects them and provides analyses of democratic development on the continent. Together, they develop strategies to strengthen democratic structures and advance policies geared towards the common good.
