Since coming to power in 2006, former revolutionary leader Daniel Ortega and his wife and Vice President Rosario Murillo have successively brought all arms of government and the military in Nicaragua under their control. Human rights, and in particular the right to freedom of expression, have been severely restricted since the public protests against the regime in 2018. Journalists in Nicaragua are threatened, persecuted, attacked, imprisoned and forced to flee.

The FES Human Rights Award 2024 will be awarded to the organization Periodistas y Comunicadores Independientes de Nicaragua (PCIN). This network of over 100 journalists and media professionals from Nicaragua has been supporting independent reporting on their country since 2018 by developing numerous services for safe and professional reporting for journalists. PCIN also provides legal advice and important support for Nicaraguan media professionals in exile, who often live in precarious circumstances. In addition, PCIN documents cases of human rights violations committed against journalists.

By awarding the 2024 Human Rights Prize, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung is honouring PCIN's tireless commitment to freedom of expression and human rights in Nicaragua's repressive political context.

We are delighted to welcome Irene Khan, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Opinion and Expression, as our laudatory speaker that evening. In a panel discussion with other guests, we will also talk about Nicaragua's development and political prospects.

Kind regards,

Valeska Hesse
Head of the Department Latin America and the Caribbean
