“More Than the Strait:
Shifting Power Dynamics and Political Perspectives in Yemen”
Panel Discussion
Thursday, 12 November 2026
6:00–7:30 p.m.
Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, Hiroshimastr. 28, 10785 Berlin, Building 2, Conference Room 2
Yemen is once again at the centre of dynamic political and security developments. The military escalation between the government and the Houthis, the potential realignment of power relations within the country, and the differing interests of regional actors are posing new challenges to Yemen’s political future. At the same time, the new Yemeni government faces the task of developing ways to ensure the provision of essential services to the population, promote stabilisation, and advance conflict resolution under difficult political, economic, and security conditions.
How should the latest developments in Yemen be assessed? What prospects does the realignment of power relations offer for the political process? What role can the new government play in stabilising the country? And how can the political and socio-economic interests of the south be incorporated into a viable political process?
As part of the Yemen Policy Papers project, the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung, together with CARPO e.V., provides analyses of key issues relating to Yemen’s political, economic, and social development. Together with selected authors of these analyses and other experts, we would like to discuss current developments in Yemen and present key findings from the publication series on the country’s political, economic, and social development.
The Yemen Policy Papers address, among other issues, the political situation and prospects of the new government, the economy and reconstruction, the role of Saudi Arabia, dynamics in southern Yemen, and the challenges posed by climate change. The aim is to link sound analysis with concrete policy recommendations for German and international policymakers.
