Three days before the BRICS summit in Brazil, FES is hosting an online debate on the strategic agenda of Brazil’s BRICS presidency and the future perspectives of the alliance.

A new policy paper by FES Brazil on this issue serves as the starting point for a discussion among politicians, policy-makers, and experts from think-tanks and academia.

The debate will be broadened for an assessment of the role of BRICS in the changing global political order, the future of multilateral cooperation, and what role Germany and Europe can play.

We cordially invite you to our discussion “BRICS – Brazil’s 2025 presidency and perspectives for the global order”

Thursday, 3 July, 4:30–6:00 p.m.

We would like to examine the global political significance of BRICS from Brazilian, Indonesian, Chinese, and German perspectives with a small, select group of politicians and experts:

  • What have been the main objectives of Brazil’s foreign policy during Lula 3.0's term, and what are priorities for the remainder of his term?
  • What role does BRICS play for Brazil? What goals is Brazil pursuing with its membership, and what agenda is it pushing during its presidency?
  • What role does BRICS play in a rapidly changing international context?
  • To what extent is BRICS complimenting or challenging the existing multilateral system and Western dominated international institutions?
  • Does BRICS have a common position or strategy, are member states’ interests converging or diverting? What does BRICS represent?
  • What stance should Germany and Europe take towards BRICS? Is there a German or European BRICS strategy? Is there need for recalibrating the relations with the countries of the Global South?
  • What are ambitions and expectations of Indonesia in joining the BRICS alliance?

Our guests:

  • H. E. Roberto Jaguaribe Gomes de Mattos, Brasilian Ambassador to Germany
  • Adis Ahmetovic, MP, Foreign Policy Spokesperson, SPD
  • Ana Tereza Lopes Marra de Sousa, PhD in International Relations, Professor at the Universidade Federal do ABC, Brazil
  • Abigaël Vasselier, Director Policy & European Affairs/Head of Program Foreign Relations, Mercator Institute for China Studies (MERICS), tbc
