Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
Crises such as the Russian war in Ukraine and the Covid pandemic have exposed the vulnerability of global supply chains in recent years. The energy and mobility transition in the context of the climate crisis is at the same time driving the demand for raw materials such as lithium.
But while China over the past two decades has established itself as an important financier, trade and cooperation partner in Latin America and has underpinned its presence with numerous political initiatives and soft power projects, Europe's engagement in Latin America has only regained momentum with the impacts of the recent crises.
Against this background, we invite you to explore the nature of China’s involvement in Latin America in comparison to Europe’s in an online discussion on Wednesday, 17th April 2024 from 16.30-18h, drawing from the publication Lessons for Europe? Understanding China's Engagement in Latin America.
** What characterises China’s involvement in Latin America?
** How do China’s economic and political activities impact Latin American societies?
** In which ways do Chinese and European goals and approaches differ towards Latin America?
** What interests and expectations do Latin America actors have? How do they perceive China’s and Europe’s involvement?
** How can Europe offer added value in its relationship to countries in Latin America?
Our panellists are:
Benjamin Creutzfeldt, PhD, Sinologist and political analyst of China’s International Relations, and co-author of the publication Lessons for Europe? Understanding China's Engagement in Latin America
Matt Ferchen, PhD, Senior Fellow and Senior Research Scholar at the Yale Law School Paul Tsai China Center, USA, and co-author of Lessons for Europe? Understanding China's Engagement in Latin America
