The Friedrich Ebert Foundation and the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial are happy to invite you to a public discussion:
"I just wanted to get it out of my mind" - Concentration camp survivor Marian Hawling and family members talk about passing on the memory in their family
May 2, 2021, 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., CET
online on zoom
Marian Hawling, born in Poland, resisted National Socialist Germany actively in various European countries. After being arrested, he was imprisoned in several concentration camps, among them Neuengamme in Hamburg. He not only survived the camp, but also the bombing of the prisoners ship Cap Arcona in Lübeck Bay on May 3, 1945. Later he emigrated to Australia, where he still lives, and did not talk about his imprisonment for decades, not even with his loved ones.
Together with his wife Elizabeth and son Mark Marian Hawling will talk about why it took him so long to speak openly about his life during National Socialism and why he decided to finally pass on the memory.
Moderation Ulrike Jensen, Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial.
The interview will be held in English only. Due to the time difference to Australia we invite you to a morning discussion at 10 o clock.
Further information
A cooperation of the Neuengamme Concentration Camp Memorial and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
The event is open to the public and free of charge. The discussion will take place online on zoom.us.
