Cultural memory, being crucial for collective identity, has been cultivated by religious communities, ethnic groups and nation-states alike. But it is of no concern for many purpose-oriented, interest-driven groups that make up civil society. Still, the need for group identities - for dissimilation - shapes civil society as well.

On Ending Nationalismus

Nationalism is impeding human progress. It will be tamed if citizens get involved - beyond mere membership - in sub-national or transnational communities. The nation-state as the community of communities will still command loyalty but it will be less crucial for people's identity. Supranational governance as the emergence of third-layer community will be facilitated.
