Ukraine - The Era of Independence

The study examines the entrifugal forces within the state and the society including the divergences between western Ukraine and eastern Ukraine, church conflict and minority problems, the conflict with Russia and the Soviet inheritance (nuclear weapons, Black Sea fleet, assets abroad, foreign debt, status of the Crimean peninsula), as well as economic, foreign and security policy problems that threaten the state and national identity of the Ukrainians. It also depicts the economic and social situation as well as the domestic political balance in the wake of the 1994 parliamentary and presidential elections.
