Abstract

This study deals with the Russian elections and the planned admittance of East European countries into NATO. On the eve of the Russian parliamentary and presidential elections an analysis is made of the existing power structures, the economic and social situation, the relationship between the centre of power and the peripheral regions as well as Russian foreign and security policy. The study also deals with the results of the Duma-elections of December 1995.

The second part refers to the future role of NATO, the particular interests of individual NATO member countries, the interests of Central East European countries and the NATO engagement in Bosnia.
