Abstract

The Karabakh Conflict
- Moscow's Hand in Transcaucasia -

The Study depicts the domestic development in Armenia and Azerfaijan between 1991 and 1994 as well as the influence of Russia on the balance of power within and between the two countries. A special section is dedicated to the "treaty of the century" on oil development reached between Azerbaijan and western consortiums. The final section addresses the Karabakh conflict, the way in which Moscow has used the conflict as well as the great power rivalry (United States - Russia) and the regional powers (Iran and Turkey) in Transcaucasia. The paper also examines the issue of an OSCE peacekeeping mission in the region.
