The political dialogue as one major pillar of the Cotonou Agreement is a new element in the relation between the ACP group and the EU. It aims to strengthen the political dimension of the partnership by stressing the importance of good governance for development. The idea is to establish long-term regional mechanisms to help all parties combine their peace, democratisation and overall development efforts within a given region. The political dialogue shall also cover environmental, gender, migration and cultural issues. Experience in these fields of work shall be systematically collected and discussed at the political dialogue meetings. In addition to the national governments, civil society organisations and regional bodies shall participate in the forum. The Joint Parliamentary Assembly shall play a mayor role in this context.
