Report by Masiiwa Rusare (Trade and
Development Studies Centre), Harare, Zimbabwe. The workshop
was organized by Trade and Development Studies (Trades)
Centre, Friedrich Ebert Stiftung, ACP Business Forum and
Institute for Global Dialogue (IGD). It was to prepare
SADC/COMESA for oncoming ACP-EU trade negotiations starting on
September 2002 and to continue for 6 years. The conference
objectives were, among others, comparison of EU and
ACP/COMESA/SADC negotiating mandates, impact assessment of
EPAs in SADC and COMESA as well as discussion of COMESA/SADC
strategic interests and

Report The conference sought to
initiate a process of dialogue between the private sector and
the public sector and concretise modalities of benefiting from
the Cotonou Agreement. Participants to the conference from
government, private sector, donor community, diplomatic
missions, the media and other organisations were expected to
come up with recommendations for establishing and enhancing
effective private-public sector
dialogue. | |
